I stopped relaxing my hair
last summer. Kiyah Wright in LA does my hair and she's so good at it that I didn't even notice that 6 weeks...8 weeks... 3 months had gone by with no relaxer. She'd blow my hair out, flat iron it and I would go. I was also weaving at times, so I just didn't think about getting a relaxer. And then before I knew it, it was Christmas and my hair was getting so long that I was able to slick it back into a bun...then I bought a little friend to make my bun a little fuller [laughter]. I began to notice how beautiful my hair was at the root, and how soft it was. Also, my daughter is 7 and she's starting to really stare at Mommy and what Mommy does, and I wanted her to love her hair. So I slowly began trimming it.
I started wearing natural styles around February when I met Felicia Leatherwood. She helped me when I was still holding on to some of the length. She twisted my hair up into that wonderful chignon for the Essence Luncheon in February and also turned me on to SheaMoisture.

Street Car Named Desire opened on Monday and it's 8 shows a week for 16 weeks. I took this opportunity to really take care of my hair and start over. There's just something about playing this character of Blanche DuBois, as an artist, as an actor, I have to be myself 100% and bring everything that I have to the role. In every way, it was finally time to make that transition to natural hair. I went over to Hair Rules Salon on March 17th and Anthony Dicky chopped me up and started me over! CN: That's wonderful! Congratulations on your Big Chop. You look stunning. How do you protect your hair while on stage?
The play is set in 1951, so I wear a wig. CN: What rocks about natural hair?
My hair is just really loving being natural, being moisturized. Our hair is so much more versatile than what we give it credit for. We're raised to immediately straighten it, fry it and never take the time to learn to work with it. My hair can do so many more things now that it's natural- - I can wear it coiled, I can pick it out, or I can blow it straight.
Tips and hairstyles for my super curly hair? I have super curly, sorta poofy hair
, and was wondering if you guys had any tips or hairstyles for hair like mine. It goes a little past my shoulders, and I have bangs on the right side of my face.
My friend has the same hair
type, and what I like to do with her hair is grab two one-inch sections from the front of her hair then pull them back and chip them together at the back of her head. Clip your bangs up if you think it looks better, because she has no bangs, so i don't know how it would look.
My hair will completely blow straight... who knew?! A little bit of heat and I have a pixie cut! And for those times when I do blow it out or flat iron it, I like to keep it that way for a few days because, you know, it cost 100 bucks... but I never miss my workout! CN: Speaking of workouts, tell me about this ' Save Your Do ' wrap I've been hearing about.
The idea came to me last year when I noticed a common excuse emerge among busy everyday women (myself included) about why they couldn’t work out: their hair. Hair is a serious issue for most of us women because after spending a ton of time and money to have it washed, blow dried, flat-ironed and curled, none of us want to sweat and mess it up all over again.
Considering my own transition to natural hair, during the conception phase, I knew I had to consider all the ways Black women wear their hair. I had to make sure that I included our sisters who have weaves in the back with their front edges out, my sisters who have lots of thick, beautiful natural hair, my loc'ed sisters, my relaxed sisters, even my sisters who don't care about their hair as much as they just want a good sweat absorber.
What are good hairstyles for curly hair? ok I'm 12 years old, have mid-back length curly-wavy blonde hair
. i'm growing out my bangs so right now i can tuck them behind my ears, there about an inch past my chin. i part my hair off to the right a little. i usually wear my hair in a pony tail or down. not looking to cut my hair.
put your hair
in braids, french braids are really in style right now. put it up in a low, messy bun put just the top layers up, low side pony or braid. theres alot you can do with curly hair and alot of people who have curly hair look best when their hair is down. hope i helped.
It's a great option over having to wear a bandanna, baseball cap or doorag to the gym. I designed the band to include everyone and it comes in 3 different styles.
Prior to your work out, I encourage you to add a little product to your front edges, like a natural balm or wax and then tie the wrap on snugly. And like I said, in going natural, I discovered that you don't need a lot of heat. So even if I'm wearing my hair straight, after my workout, when I get home from the gym, if there is still a little moisture lingering, I can put the hair dryer on cool, just enough to lift the moisture out and then maybe bump it with the flat iron and go do what I have to do. CN: What are your favorite hair products?
I'm in love with three major brands right now- Hair Rules Shampoo and Conditioner, Jane Carter Solutions, her mousses and her hair balms, and SheaMoisture's Black Soap Shampoo and Conditioner. They're all amazing! I rotate with those three and throw in in a little Kinky Curly Knot Today on my quick days. CN: What does the future hold for your TWA?
My goal is to grow all the way out.

So you’ve made the leap over to naturalism and what a leap it was! After holding your tresses captive by relaxers most of your life, you had finally had enough, it was over. It was bitter sweet initially because after all, there was a history there that you couldn’t help but respect. A bond was formed as you sat in that salon chair every 4-6 weeks, or whenever your edges sternly reminded you that it was time. As you watched your stylist get out that bowl of white stuff and her plastic gloves, you envisioned super straight edges and hair
you could easily run your fingers through. Yeah it may burn for a minute but it was a necessary evil. Beauty knows no pain, right? Who can blame you for missing it every now and then, especially on those rough days. We all have those days where we want to take what is seemingly the easier route and that which is familiar. But you’re here now, finally relaxer free! You’ve transitioned your way to the top, endured the struggle of maintaining two textures and trying to look good while doing so.
What's a website that has curly hair hairstyles on there!? I really need a cute hairstyle for tomorrow. It's my first cheer practice and I want to impress them. I would also like to try new things with my curly hair

All the while telling yourself and your coif, “if we can just make it through, it will all be worth it”. Nothing ventured nothing gained right? Only now, it seems like it was all for nothing. Three years later and what a disappointment! Your hair won’t grow, in fact, it appears to be breaking, these straight pieces keep popping up all random and what not, even though you say you trim a few inches every other month! Not to mention, it always looks like ish! What happened to the rainbow at the end of the tunnel? Wasn’t it supposed to look like the beautiful girls in the You Tube videos? Who wants to walk around looking busted. Might as well go back to the relaxer! What’s a natural to do? Sound familiar?
Before you flip out and decide to undo three years worth of progress and efforts, let’s be rational here. 1
. First things first – assess your situation Identify the source of your panic by doing some brainstorming. What are the issues surrounding your panic?
- My hair won’t grow This is a chief complaint amongst naturals who are experiencing hair challenges.
Question: With the exception of medical issues or permanent damage, it is doubtful that your hair is simply not growing. Hair grows approximately ½ inch per month. What your issue may be is that you are not retaining the length, particularly if you trim a few inches every other month. You are in turn cutting the hair growth progress you’ve made.
Thumbs up for answering: What are some cute hairstyles for curly hair to school? I have curly hair
about 2 in past my shoulders. My hair is dark brown, my face is round, my eyes are hazel, and my skin is pale. What hairstyles/hair accessories would look good. BONUS: What are some cute/pretty outfit ideas for school. Ill give everyone a thumbs up for answers.
If you're, like, a ten year old, then pigtails would be nice with a t-shirt and jeans, or maybe a mini-skirt. If your a young teen (thirteen - fifteen) a ponytail or bun might look cute with a t-shirt and skinny jeans. If you are anything older that that, just leave your hair
down or push it to the side (like my avatar) with a nice hair clip. Don't wear anything.
- It appears to be breaking If you are experiencing breakage, this is also related to length retention. What products are you using? Does your shampoo contain sulphates which strip hair of moisture thus leading to breakage? Are you providing your hair with the added moisture needed? Do you seal your ends to lock in that moisture? Do you protect your hair at night while sleeping? Perhaps a protein treatment is in order or maybe you are experiencing protein overload. How you style your hair can also cause breakage. Styles that require the hair be pulled tightly can cause breakage.
- These straight pieces keep popping up If you are noticing random straight pieces throughout your hair, it could be a result of heat damage. How often do you expose your hair to heat? Is heat a consistent part of your regimen? This could possibly lead to loss of curl pattern.
- It always looks like ish How your hair appears is a direct reflection of the health of your hair. Once the health issue is addressed, so will the appearance. Deep conditioning and using oils such as coconut which helps seal the cuticle and is packed with protein is a great start towards restoring your hair back to health.
Don’t make an emotional decision – this is a decision that requires a certain degree of logic and emotions can hinder the process. 3
. Document your hair experiences (when you notice certain things are occurring, how often you are using heat, which products render certain results, etc.) Having a written record will assist with identifying patterns. 4.
Acknowledge that there is no easy fix. Think of it as a trip to your physician’s office when you aren’t feeling well. You give him or her the rundown of things that are occurring, her or she will ask a few questions based on what you’ve explained and then start to do a process of elimination. i.e., let’s try this solution, check back in a few weeks and see what we are left with. If that doesn’t work, we’ll move on to solutions B & C and if necessary D & E until a resolution is reached. 5.
Consider cutting it all off and starting over on a fresh head of hair. This is a last resort for some but no big deal to others. Some naturals big chop every few years. You will still need to follow a consistent hair care regimen, but this gives you the opportunity to start with a clean...
